A Northern Light, by Jennifer Donnelly

Check out my 100 Pages Meme on A Northern Light here!

A Northern Light is about sixteen-year-old Mattie Gokey. She’s super smart, works really hard, and takes care of her four younger siblings. Mattie reads, writes, and loves words all together. She even looks up a word each day. Mattie and her family live on a farm and each day she goes out to plow the field, feed the animals, and many other hard jobs. Since Mattie’s mother isn’t there to help her, Mattie is on her own. And its always been Mattie’s dream to go to college in New York. But how can she go when everyone else disagrees? While getting a job at a resort, Mattie works to earn money to save up for something worthwhile in her life. Meanwhile, Grace Brown’s body shows up after a boating crash and Mattie knows its not an accident. After a young woman gives Mattie the letters of Grace Brown and Chester Gillette, Mattie finds the truth between these “star-crossed lovers.”

My opinion: I though that A Northern Light was pretty good! Mattie is a great, smart character who cares more about others than herself. I liked the idea of Mattie wanting to go to college, though I didn’t like the idea of her family discouraging her not to go. I understand that Mattie’s family needs her, but doesn’t she do enough for them? I also liked how Mattie’s father finally let her get a job at the resort to make money and how Royal showed interest in Mattie. He even wanteded to marry her! I didn’t really put into thought that this book was based on a true story. The murder of Grace Brown and the death of Chester Gillette was something I didn’t think would ever happen in real life. Unfortunately, I didn’t know what to think about the ending. Maybe I was disappointed? I guess the ending was for the better and for the worse. The ending was the reason why I didn’t give A Northern Light more than four stars.
