SYNOPSIS - (From Goodreads)
Jonah is on a mission to break every bone in his body. Everyone knows that broken bones grow back stronger than they were before. And Jonah wants to be stronger—needs to be stronger—because everything around him is falling apart. Breaking, and then healing, is Jonah’s only way to cope with the stresses of home, girls, and the world on his shoulders. When Jonah’s self-destructive spiral accelerates and he hits rock bottom, will he find true strength or surrender to his breaking point?
THOUGHTS
Break was the second novel I read by Hannah Moskowitz. I ended up reading Invincible Summer first since it was a summer read, but both novels were amazing.
Break is different from a lot of other novels out there. In both of Moskowitz’s novels, her characters are all involved with their family. I haven’t read too many novels that have focused on their families in such depth like Moskowitz has.
I’d say that Jonah and Jesse are the main characters of Break, even though it’s written in Jonah’s point of view. Besides Jonah’s “mission” (even though he says it’s not a mission) to break his bones, Jonah has many other problems to deal with. Like his parents fighting, his brother constantly crying, and what it seems to be another mission to “save” Jesse’s life. I liked how Jonah cares so much for his brother. It seemed like he cared more for Jesse than himself. When Jonah wasn’t helping Jesse, Jonah was breaking his bones. Moskowitz’s description of Jonah breaking his bones were pretty intense. It was shocking to read those scenes!
Finally, Moskowitz is an amazing writer. Her writing reminds me of Ned Vizzini’s and Ellen Hopkins. (Although she doesn’t talk about drugs nor does she write in free verse.) If you haven’t read any of Hannah Moskowitz’s books yet, I strongly recommend that you read them. Strongly. Recommend.
