Derby Girl, By Shauna Cross

15254898.JPGDerby Girl, a 240 page book by Shauna Cross is about fifteen-year-old Bliss Cavendar who loves music and hates beauty pageants. Her mom forces Bliss to participate in these beauty pageants which practically ruins her life. Then one day, Bliss and her best friend, Pash, decide to crash a roller derby party in Austin. Bliss then lies about her age after being invited to try out to join the local all girls roller derby team. After making the team, Bliss starts to sneak out, use her best friend as a “Pash-mobile”, and leaves her friend for a guy in a boy band. Bliss thinks that becoming a derby girl has made her life better, but things go wrong: Bliss’s parents find out what she is doing behind their backs, Pash is done with their friendship, and her boyfriend leaves her for another girl. Bliss isn’t sure what to do now. All she has left is her passion for roller derby and her fellow roller derby girls.

My opinion: I really enjoyed reading Derby Girl, by Shauna Cross. After finding out that Whip It was going to be in theaters, I got to reading the book right away. For a first book, Shauna Cross is a pretty good writer. She knows how hard it is to hide something you love because your parents don’t accept the fact that it is not “lady-like.” I think that all girls will love reading Derby Girl because its sad, funny, and enjoyable all at the same time. I recommend this to all girls! I am sure you will love reading this. I know I can’t wait to watch the movie!
