SYNOPSIS - (From Goodreads)
In Beatrice Prior’s dystopian Chicago, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue—Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is—she can’t have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself.
During the highly competitive initiation that follows, Beatrice renames herself Tris and struggles to determine who her friends really are—and where, exactly, a romance with a sometimes fascinating, sometimes infuriating boy fits into the life she’s chosen. But Tris also has a secret, one she’s kept hidden from everyone because she’s been warned it can mean death. And as she discovers a growing conflict that threatens to unravel her seemingly perfect society, she also learns that her secret might help her save those she loves . . . or it might destroy her.
Debut author Veronica Roth bursts onto the literary scene with the first book in the Divergent series—dystopian thrillers filled with electrifying decisions, heartbreaking betrayals, stunning consequences, and unexpected romance.
THOUGHTS
Words cannot express how much I loved reading Divergent. It was so much better than I expected! If you think its just your average dystopian story, well you’re absolutely wrong! Everything about it was amazing; the plot, the dialogue, each of the factions, and the characters! I loved reading about every single one of them.
First of all, the plot was superb. Veronica Roth added the right amount of everything! Including the right amount of subplots, so there wasn’t too much going on. Every time she foreshadowed something, I couldn’t forget about it. When I finally read more of what she hinted earlier, I was very excited! It gave you an ah-ha! moment or a satisfied feeling of “I knew that was going to happen!” Also, her romantic addition to Divergent? Beyond A+! You’ll be dying for more Tris and Four action!
I couldn’t get enough of each of the factions! Reading about Amity, Erudite, Dauntless, Candor, Abnegation, and the oh-so dangerous Divergent was so exciting! At first when I was reading about each of them, I couldn’t figure out what faction I belonged to. Then a friend on Twitter told me to take the quiz on Facebook, and can you guess what I got? Candor! I was pretty shocked at first, because I was nothing like Christina. But then I thought how I’m nothing like the other factions, and the one I fit into most is Candor.
As of now, I think that Tris is my new favorite heroine. She’s strong physically and mentally, and so much braver than I am. Plus, Roth describes her as short, and I’m pretty short, so it’s nice to read about short, powerful girls
You will seriously fall in love with Tris’ personality!
Divergent is a GREAT dystopian read! It is now one of my favorite books. Roth is an author you’ll look forward to reading more of; I know I am!
