Hi everyone! I got a chance to interview Troy CLE, the author of the Marvelous World series. If you haven’t read my review on the first book, The Marvelous Effect, you can read it here.
Before we start, here is a short bio of Troy CLE:
Troy CLE is the author of The Marvelous Effect: Book One of the Marvelous World Saga (Simon & Schuster / Random House Audio), and possesses a personal story of dedication, perseverance, and ingenuity. When he could not find a literary agent or major publisher, Troy CLE took his destiny into his own hands, employing his education, multimedia skills, and entrepreneurial zeal to self-publish and promote his novel. Using an alias to act as his own publicist, he generated the exposure needed to land two major publishing deals. The Marvelous Effect was launched nationwide in hardcover and audio in 2007 and was awarded the 2008 Essence Literary Award for Children’s Literature. A graduate of New York University (BA American Literature and English, MS Digital Design), Troy CLE currently resides in his hometown of East Orange, New Jersey.
Interview:
1. Who or what was your main inspiration when writing The Marvelous Effect and The Marvelous World Series? Why did they inspire you?
Marvelous World came about because I wanted to be a Goonie. That is my FAVORITE movie and I wanted to see myself go on an adventures like The Goonies. I vowed I would write a stories where kids like myself would be able to be the ones to go on adventures and the result is Marvelous World.
2. Louis Proof, the main character of the Marvelous World Series was put into “a coma” a little after he visited the JunkYard JunkLot. Can you tell us the main reason why he wasn’t feeling like himself after his first visit?
Louis Proof and all earthbound FAVORITES are infected with a dormant celestial virus. When Golonious and Trife appear on Earth the virus was triggered and begins to affect Louis. The virus changes Louis’s body and he evolves into a CLE. Everyone has to read the book to find out what that means and how powerful Louis will become. I will say it is one heck of a ride.
3. How did you come up with the characters of The Marvelous Effect? How difficult was it to come up with them?
It was VERY easy to come up with the characters because most of them they are all inspired be people in my real life. It is funny because Marvelous World is supposedly fantasy but I talk to “Brandon Davis” all the time. I was just giving “Lacey Proof” dating advice (in real life she is a a teenager now). I can say I have not spoken to “Galonious” in years. Ha!
4. For those who might consider reading The Marvelous Effect, what would you tell them to expect?
As you said in your review you had no idea what to expect and you found the book to be much better than you thought it would be. You also rated my series up there with the biggest YA series out. What I am getting at is anyone who reads it should expect an action filled story that will connect with them in some unique.
5. Will you be writing other books and series in the future? A sequel to the Marvelous World Series, maybe?
You will notice that levels II, III, and IV are missing from “The Marvelous Effect.” Those levels are a full book titled “Olivion’s Favorites.” That book chronicles the events that take place during Louis’s coma. That is the biggest, most important, and action packed part of the story so far! If you think you know what Marvelous World is about you will find out that you have NO idea how big the story is. That book is the second of what is currently a six book series.
6. Why did you become an author? What made you enjoy writing?
I became an author because being able to express yourself through the written word is the basis of being successful at creating most types of multi-media entertainment. It is also my form of escapism, meaning if anything ever when wrong in my like I could escape to my own written world.
7. Do you have any advice for young writers when writing?
I think that all young writers should just start writing for fun and that’s it. Do not get caught up in the technical aspect of your newfound craft or if people will like it. For example, when I first started writing I would pen stories about my favorite video games like Metroid and Zelda. After I beat them I would write my own sequels to the games. My stories probably really sucked but I was wrting because that was fun and at that point that is all that mattered. I guess it is fitting that some say my books have a video game sensibility to them. In short, don’t worry the right wrong of your writing and just have a great time. Oh wait there are three other things: Read! Read! Read!
8. If there was one person in the world that would read your series, who would it be?
I would want the quintessential kid who really hates to read and only loves video games to read my book. I think that kid will LOVE it and become a reader. ❖
