SYNOPSIS - (From Goodreads)
Budding designer Lola Nolan doesn’t believe in fashion . . . she believes in costume. The more expressive the outfit — more sparkly, more fun, more wild — the better. But even though Lola’s style is outrageous, she’s a devoted daughter and friend with some big plans for the future. And everything is pretty perfect (right down to her hot rocker boyfriend) until the dreaded Bell twins, Calliope and Cricket, return to the neighborhood.
When Cricket — a gifted inventor — steps out from his twin sister’s shadow and back into Lola’s life, she must finally reconcile a lifetime of feelings for the boy next door.
THOUGHTS
So… Can we just think about perfection right now? Stephanie Perkins has made me one happy girl. Lola and the Boy Next Door is way beyond amazing. I don’t know how else to describe this novel because honestly, I thought it was perfect. There was so much that I loved about Lola, Andy, Nathan, Cricket, and oh my goodness, Anna and St. Clair.
I don’t think it’s much of a spoiler, but when Anna and St. Clair was first mentioned, I freaked. I was so happy that they appeared. Honestly, I didn’t even think about them being characters in this novel! Both Anna and St. Clair made great characters in Perkins’ second novel. Not just the first one. ![]()
The moment I started reading Lola and the Boy Next Door, I knew that Lola had some great taste in style. To express yourself by dressing up in costume, wearing wigs, and glittery fake eyelashes? I love that. Some people may think otherwise, but one of my favorite things about Lola was her style. I also love Lola’s personality. She’s so unique, honest, and humorous. I wish I knew someone like her in real life!
Andy and Nathan are also a couple characters that I’d like to acknowledge. I don’t often read about many gay parents in YA books! They were also great fathers to Lola!
And of course I would have to mention Cricket. He seems like the perfect boyfriend any girl would love to be with. I remember the phrase “nice guys finish last” being mentioned in the novel but I don’t think it’s true. How can nice guys finish last when the mean ones don’t seem to get anywhere? Hmm, Max?
I hope Perkins gives Lola and Cricket a role in her next novel because now I have another couple that I can’t get enough of!
