Massive, by Julia Bell is about teenager Cameron who is having a hard time living her life. She has weight problems that her mom can’t stand, and her mom has always been on a diet even though you can see her bones through her clothes. The only person who understands Cameron is her dad, even though he’s not Cameron’s real Dad, they have a “real” father-daughter-relationship. Cameron’s life is hard as it is; but then her mom drags her to Birmingham. She claims that she doesn’t need to live with Brian (Cameron’s dad) and that she needs to move on to a new and improved life. Cameron’s life doesn’t get any better, it gets worse. She misses her dad, she doesn’t have any friends, and her mom is getting worse with all her dieting. After a series of complaints, her mom can’t take it anymore. And neither can Cameron. A surprising ending will change the way you think about dieting-forever.
My opinion: Massive was a really good book. It was sad to read, but it shows that you should be who you are without anyone telling you who or what to be. Cameron is a strong character, even though her mom is a little bit on the crazy side, she can cope with all the bad things in her life. After reading Massive, I thought about the people who have problems like Cameron’s. If everyone accepted who they are, I think the world would be happier. Over all, Massive was a great book. Like I said, it was sad, but you should give it a try. I recommend this to all readers!
