SYNOPSIS – (From Goodreads)
When an unexpected inheritance enables Ari to transfer to an elite Manhattan prep school, she makes a wealthy new friend, Leigh. Leigh introduces Ari to the glamorous side of New York–and to her gorgeous cousin, Blake. Ari doesn’t think she stands a chance, but amazingly, Blake asks her out. As their romance heats up, they find themselves involved in an intense, consuming relationship. Ari’s family worries that she is losing touch with the important things in life, like family, hard work, and planning for the future.
When misfortune befalls Blake’s family, he pulls away, and Ari’s world drains of color. As she struggles to get over the breakup, Ari must finally ask herself: were their feelings true love . . . or something else?

THOUGHTS
Other Words for Love was a nice, quick contemporary read. Well, I guess I shouldn’t say contemporary since this takes place in the 80′s. I really enjoyed how Lorraine Zago Rosenthal wrote about other problems in the story, besides just Ari’s relationship with Blake. Ari had to deal with tons of family problems, friendship, and keeping her grades up. Rosenthal knows how to make things real!
Ari and Blake’s relationship was intense. Written in Ari’s point of view, Rosenthal shows how much Ari cares for Blake. I thought their relationship was true love, to be honest.
One of the problems I had when reading the novel was that I kept forgetting Other Words for Love took place in the 80′s. It would have made the novel better if there were more qualities of that time period. The only thing that reminded me that this took place in the 80′s was the discovery of AIDs. This topic was mentioned a number of times throughout the novel.
Although it wasn’t one of my favorite reads, Other Words for Love was quite satisfying. The ending wasn’t my favorite either, to be honest. I would have liked it to be longer! But, if you like cute contemporary novels that don’t take too long to read, Other Words for Love is something you should consider reading! Rosenthal did a pretty good job with her debut novel. I will definitely read her future novels!
